Vision and Balance: The Overlooked Connection in Fall Prevention

When we think about balance, most of us picture leg strength, coordination, or core stability. But one of the biggest predictors of falls may actually be something we use every second of the day—our eyes.
A recent study from the University of Michigan found that older adults who reported vision difficulties were significantly more likely to fall—and those who fell repeatedly faced a higher risk of early mortality. Researchers emphasized that vision problems can create a cascade effect: when sight is impaired, the brain receives less accurate information about where the body is in space, leading to instability and repeated falls.
Why Vision Matters for Balance
Your eyes, inner ear, and muscles all send feedback to your brain about your position and movement. If your vision is blurred, poorly corrected, or your depth perception is off, your body has to work harder to maintain equilibrium—especially in low light or on uneven ground.
Even small vision changes can:
Reduce your confidence with movement
Increase sway when standing still
Make it harder to detect trip hazards
Lead to “visual dependence,” where balance falters if your eyes can’t see clearly
Simple Steps to Protect Your Vision—and Your Balance
Schedule regular eye exams: Many vision changes happen gradually. Keep your prescription up to date and ask your provider about contrast sensitivity testing, not just acuity.
Improve home lighting: Soft, consistent light in hallways, bathrooms, and entryways can prevent nighttime stumbles.
Train your balance system: Exercises that challenge your visual and vestibular systems together (like standing on one foot while focusing on a moving object) strengthen your body’s ability to adapt.
Don’t ignore small changes: If you find yourself bumping into furniture, misjudging steps, or feeling dizzy when turning your head—get checked. These may be early warning signs your vision or balance system needs attention.
